September on Hilton Head Island – what a beautiful time to visit! This is one of our favorite months here and for good reason. The summer rush has eased up, but the weather? Still beautiful enough for beach days and watching the sunset to everything in between.

The beaches are much quieter, the sunsets are still breathtaking, and there’s usually a good breeze in the air. Whether you're wanting to plan a getaway, a family adventure, or just some well-deserved R&R, we're here to help you make the most of your September getaway.

Let’s dive into what makes this month so special and how you can enjoy the most of your time here on the island.

Weather in September

September offers beautiful weather for outdoor activities with an average high of 85 and in the low 70's. When the sun is out it can feel much warmer than what the temperature says! Toward the end of September the temperatures can drop to a low of 65 with more chances of short rainfalls.

Compared to the peak of summer in July and August, September offers slightly cooler temps and a bit less humidity. You might get a short afternoon shower here and there, but they usually pass quickly.

Bring light layers for the evenings and definitely pack that swimsuit – the ocean is still plenty warm for swimming with an average temp of 79-82 degrees.

Crowd Levels

September is the sweet spot. The crowds from summer have thinned out, especially after Labor Day. You’ll find less traffic, shorter waits at restaurants, and plenty of space to spread out on the beach. It feels like the island breathes a little easier this time of year.

Top Things to Do

Here’s what we recommend to anyone visiting the island this month:

Places to Stay

When September rolls around, Hilton Head Island starts to slow down a bit—and that’s a total win for travelers. Vacation rentals are still the way to go, but with the summer crowds thinning out, you’ve got more options and often better deals.

It’s the sweet spot: ocean temps are still warm, the weather’s just right, and you can soak up those dreamy sunsets from a breezy deck or beachfront balcony without the hustle. Whether you're eyeing a house with a private pool or a charming coastal villa, there’s a perfect fit waiting—no matter your budget or style.

Booking Tips

  • Book 1-3 months out to lock in rentals in popular locations.
  • More flexible travelers or last-minute planners? You can often find deals 2–4 weeks out, especially if you're open on dates or location.
  • Weekends and holidays (like Labor Day) fill faster, so those need a bit more lead time—3 months ahead is ideal for premium dates.
  • Expect slightly lower rental prices compared to July and August – another reason people love visiting this month!
