Above Par Golf Getaway
Above Par: Luxury Golf Retreats on Hilton Head Island
Host & Home · Luxury Vacation Rentals
Courses, practice facilities, dining, and curated stays for a golf getaway
Golf runs year-round on Hilton Head Island, but it’s at its best when the mornings turn crisp. In Sea Pines, the first tee times roll out under live oaks and Spanish moss while mist still sits on the lagoons. Across Palmetto Dunes, fairways run right up to the dunes, and the salt breeze off the Atlantic picks up by the back nine. Evenings settle on the wide, hard-packed sand of Forest Beach, where the grandkids ride bikes at low tide and everyone meets back at one table. It’s a golf trip for three generations, with room for the ones who’d rather skip the 18th.

Harbour Town Golf Links
Pete Dye’s tight, tree-lined home of the RBC Heritage since 1969.
Pete Dye designed Harbour Town with Jack Nicklaus as consultant, and it opened in time for the first Heritage Golf Classic in 1969. Arnold Palmer won that week, and the PGA TOUR has come back every April since. The course plays short and narrow, with small greens and towering pines that reward placement over power. The 18th runs along Calibogue Sound toward the red-and-white Harbour Town Lighthouse. Public daily-fee rates ran about $378 to $651 in 2026, with cart and range balls included.

Robert Trent Jones Course
A classic par 72 whose 10th hole plays straight at the Atlantic.
Robert Trent Jones Sr. routed this course along the lagoons of Palmetto Dunes in the late 1960s. It plays 7,005 yards from the Gold tees, with wide fairways that suit a mixed-ability foursome. The signature 10th is a 550-yard par 5 that runs toward the ocean, with the Atlantic waiting behind the green. Golfweek named it one of the 2025 Best Courses You Can Play in South Carolina. Tee times are open to the public, and the Toptracer Range sits next door for a warm-up bucket.

Oyster Reef Golf Club
Rees Jones’ 1982 layout, with a par 3 framed by Port Royal Sound.
Rees Jones designed Oyster Reef, and it opened in 1982 on the list of America’s Top 25 New Courses. The par-72 layout carries 66 bunkers and multi-tiered greens that keep every approach honest. The par-3 6th plays toward Port Royal Sound and Parris Island, one of the most photographed holes in the Lowcountry. Later, the long par-3 16th asks for a full carry over a pond. Visitors are welcome: enter at the Whooping Crane Way gate, ask for an Oyster Reef pass, and your cart is included with green fees.

Arthur Hills Course
Rolling dunes, lagoon carries, and a lighthouse behind the 15th green.
Arthur Hills built this course in 1986 across the rolling dunes and live-oak ridges of Palmetto Dunes. It plays 6,651 yards from the Blue tees, and its 139 slope keeps low handicaps busy. Water runs the length of the 12th, and the par-5 13th opens with a forced carry off the tee. The par-3 15th sets the Palmetto Dunes lighthouse right behind the green. It earned a 2026 Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice award, and the range is open to the public without a tee time.

Casual Dining · Sea Pines
Fraser’s Tavern
Fraser’s Tavern looks out over the Heron Point and Atlantic Dunes courses, with barbecue smoke drifting out on the coastal breeze. The kitchen sticks to Southern barbecue and tavern classics, led by a signature burger that blends short rib, brisket, and chuck on a toasted sesame bun. Lunch runs 11 to 4 and dinner 4 to 9, so it works right after the 18th or once the grandkids are back from the beach.
Unwind · Pope Avenue
Hinchey’s Chicago Bar & Grill
Hinchey’s has poured cold drafts and served Chicago-style Italian beef since 1996, with 25 satellite TVs on whatever game you’re following. Happy hour runs 4 to 7 every day, with lunch, early-bird, and dinner specials, plus a private dining room for the whole group. Plenty of returning families make it their first stop on the island and their last one on the way home.
Fine Dining · Palmetto Dunes
Alexander’s
Alexander’s sits beside a quiet lagoon on Queens Folly Road, pouring from a list that holds a 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. The menu leans on locally caught seafood and seasonal Lowcountry cooking, alongside house classics like shrimp and grits and wiener schnitzel. Dinner runs 5 to 9 nightly, and reservations open six weeks out, so book ahead for the anniversary or the last night of the trip.
